The crossed-out-price trap
A discount percentage is only as useful as the comparison behind it. A product described as 40% off might have sold for nearly the same amount recently. A different color, bundle, storage size or revision can also make comparisons misleading. Before reacting to a percentage, identify the exact model and what the seller says it is comparing against.
A five-part deal check
Exact product: confirm model number, generation and included accessories. Reference price: look for a documented recent price, not only a manufacturer's suggested retail price. Total cost: shipping, tax and fees can erase an apparent bargain. Condition: new, open-box and refurbished offers belong in distinct comparisons. Return and warranty: a lower sticker price may not compensate for short return windows or weak support.
It is perfectly reasonable to pay a little more for a reputable seller or simpler returns. The best purchase is a good fit at a defensible total cost, not necessarily the lowest headline price.
The clock matters
Promotional prices can change quickly. If a page cannot identify when an offer was checked, treat it as a lead to verify—not as a live quote. Screenshots of old deals are especially poor evidence. Prices in different currencies need another check for exchange rates, fees and delivery locations.
How DealsForGuys handles it
Our Surprise Me experience separates interesting finds from verified discounts. A cool object is not automatically a bargain. Verified offers require a recorded source and expiration window; when there is no current evidence, the discount pool can be empty. That's more useful than manufacturing a deal to fill a slot.

A hypothetical example
Imagine Seller A lists a gadget for $90 with a crossed-out $150 price, while Seller B offers the same model for $84 with standard delivery. Seller A's '40% off' language does not make it the better choice. You still have to verify whether the devices are the same generation, whether either listing omits an accessory, and what shipping, taxes and returns do to the final total. These are illustrative figures, not current retail offers.
If Seller B's item is refurbished and Seller A's item is new, the products are not directly comparable. If Seller A includes a warranty or easier returns, a small price premium may be reasonable. The question changes from 'Which label shows the biggest discount?' to 'What am I actually receiving for my money?'
The screenshot evidence checklist
When you encounter an offer, record the page URL, seller, timestamp, exact model name, currency, product condition, shipping details and the price used as a comparison. A screenshot without the date or product variant can create confusion later. Never copy yesterday's price into a fresh article without rechecking it.
For our own site, the discovery engine should refuse to call an item a live discount unless its supporting price record is still valid. An empty verified-deals slot is an honest outcome when no trustworthy offer has been checked.
